Remove the Existing Insulation
ISO removes more than just blown attic insulation. We remove batt insulation, blown fiberglass, blown cellulose, spray foam, and existing vinyl-faced insulation from metal buildings when the project requires a clean starting point.
Removing the existing insulation allows the building assembly to be inspected instead of simply covering old problems with another layer of insulation.
What We Remove?
- Blown fiberglass insulation
- Blown cellulose insulation
- Fiberglass batt insulation
- Spray foam insulation
- Existing vinyl-faced metal building insulation
- Loose, damaged, or contaminated insulation
- Insulation affected by debris, moisture or other building conditions
Metal Building Insulation Removal
Older and lower-cost metal buildings are often insulated with vinyl-faced fiberglass blanket insulation installed behind the metal panels. When this material has been in place for years, removing it can reveal conditions that were hidden behind the insulation.
During metal building insulation removal, we have found issues including mold, mildew, and rust behind the existing vinyl insulation. These conditions can be difficult to identify while the insulation remains in place because the insulation can conceal the metal panels and framing.
Removing the old insulation exposes the building assembly, so these conditions can be identified and addressed before new insulation is installed
What We Look For Behind Old Metal Building Insulation
- Mold and mildew on or around areas that have experienced moisture
- Rust and corrosion on metal panels, framing, or fasteners
- Moisture damage and signs of water intrusion
- Deteriorated or compressed fiberglass
- Damaged or separated vinyl facing
- Debris and contaminants trapped behind the insulation
- Areas where the existing insulation has lost its effectiveness
Why Remove It Instead of Covering It?
Installing new insulation over an existing problem does not make the problem disappear. If moisture, mold, mildew, rust, or damaged materials are present behind the existing insulation, covering the assembly can make those conditions harder to see and address. Removal allows the owner and contractor to see what is actually happening behind the insulation before the building is closed back up.
Spray Foam Removal
ISO can also remove existing spray foam when the project requires the roof deck, wall assembly, or other substrate to be exposed. Spray foam removal is more labor-intensive than removing loose or batt insulation because the foam is adhered to the substrate
The difficulty of the removal depends on the type and thickness of foam, the substrate, access, and how much material has to be removed.
Batt Insulation Removal
Batt insulation can be removed from walls, ceilings, and other assemblies when it has become damaged, contaminated, or needs to be replaced. Removal can also be necessary when a renovation requires the cavities to be exposed for inspection or a new insulation system.
Our Removal Process
ISO uses commercial insulation-removal equipment and high-powered vacuum systems for loose insulation. Batt and spray foam removal is handled with the equipment and labor appropriate for the material and application.
The goal is to remove the existing insulation while leaving the substrate accessible for inspection and preparation for the next phase of work.
Pricing
Insulation removal typically ranges from $1.00 to $2.15 per square foot. Most standard removal projects fall around $1.25 per square foot.
The final price depends on the material being removed, the amount of labor involved and the conditions Of the project.
What Can Increase the Price?
- Debris mixed into the insulation — Construction debris, trash, wood scraps, and other material can significantly slow removal.
- Lack of access — Tight spaces, difficult access points, and restricted work areas increase labor and equipment difficulty
- Overnight work — Projects requiring removal outside normal working hours may have additional labor costs.
- Spray foam removal — Adhered foam requires substantially more labor than loose insulation.
- Difficult or hazardous working conditions — The condition of the building and the area being accessed can affect the labor required.
A Clean Starting Point
Whether the project involves an attic, a residential wall, a commercial building, or a metal building, removing the existing insulation gives the owner a chance to see what is behind it before installing something new.
If we find mold, mildew, rust, moisture damage, or other building issues during removal, those conditions can be identified before the new insulation system is installed.
