What Is Mineral Wool?

Mineral wool is a dense, fiber-based insulation material manufactured from mineral-based materials. It is available in rigid batt and board forms and is used in walls, ceilings, floors, and other building assemblies.

Mineral wool is best known for its combination of thermal insulation, sound control, and fire-resistant properties. These characteristics make it particularly useful in commercial construction and assemblies where fire and acoustic performance are important considerations.

Primarily a Commercial Application

At ISO, mineral wool is primarily an option for commercial construction. It is commonly specified when a project requires a higher level of fire, sound, or thermal performance than a standard insulation system is intended to provide.

  • Commercial interior and exterior wall assemblies
  • Areas requiring additional sound control
  • Assemblies where fire-resistance requirements are a major consideration
  • Projects with specific architectural or engineering specifications calling for mineral wool
  • Applications where a dense, rigid insulation product is preferred

Why Specify Mineral Wool?

Mineral wool offers several characteristics that can make it valuable in commercial construction.

  • Excellent resistance to heat and high temperatures
  • Strong sound-absorbing properties
  • Dense construction that can provide additional acoustic control
  • Available in products designed for specific thermal and fire-resistance applications
  •  Can be used in a variety of commercial wall and ceiling assemblies

Mineral Wool vs. Fiberglass

Mineral wool and fiberglass are both widely used insulation materials, but they serve different needs depending on the project. Fiberglass is generally the more economical choice for standard insulation applications. Mineral wool is denser and is often selected when fire resistance, acoustical performance, or the requirements of a particular commercial assembly justify the additional cost.

For most residential new construction, mineral wool is not the first insulation option we recommend from a cost standpoint. When the plans or project specifications call for mineral wool, however, it can be installed.

Availability & Lead Times

Mineral wool is currently a material that can be difficult to source. It is frequently on backorder, and lead times can make it less practical for projects with tight construction schedules.

Because availability can change, mineral wool should be discussed early in the project. If the plans call for mineral wool, send the blueprints to ISO as early as possible so material availability and lead time can be considered before installation is scheduled.

Higher Cost, When the Project Calls for It

Mineral wool is more expensive than many conventional insulation options. The material cost, availability, and installation requirements can all contribute to a higher overall project cost.

That does not mean it cannot be done. If mineral wool is specified by the architect, engineer, owner, or project requirements, ISO can provide pricing and coordinate the installation.
