What Is BIB Technology?
BIB, or blown-in blanket, is a method of insulating framed wall cavities using a netting system and blown fiberglass insulation. The netting is installed across the open wall cavities, and loosefill fiberglass is blown behind it to fill the cavity.
Owens Coming's ProPink@ L 77 Loosefill Insulation is designed for multiple applications, including walls, attics, cathedral ceilings, and floors. Owens Corning specifically provides documentation for blown-wall applications.
How the Net & Blow System Works
The netting creates a temporary containment surface over the wall cavities. The installer then blows the fiberglass insulation behind the netting until the cavity is filled to the required installed density. The insulation is held in place by the netting while the wall assembly is completed.
Owens Corning's installation information describes blowing ProPink L77 into enclosed cavities and notes that the material can be dense-packed into walls at an installed density of up to 2.50 pounds per cubic foot.
Why Use Blown Fiberglass in the Walls?
- Fills the wall cavity with blown fiberglass rather than relying on individually cut batt pieces
- Can fill around framing, wiring, plumbing, and other obstructions that can make batt installation more difficult
- Provides a consistent cavity fill when installed at the specified density
- Allows the insulation to be installed to a specified R-value for the wall assembly
- Provides thermal protection while also helping reduce air movement through the insulated wall cavity
Owens Coming states that ProPink L 77 is designed to fill the cavity, eliminate gaps that require additional handwork, and can be blown into walls at 2.5 pounds per cubic foot.
ProPink@ L77 Loosefill Insulation
Owens Corning developed ProPink L 77 specifically for loosefill applications. The manufacturer describes its high-performance fiberizing technology as producing a fiber construction designed to improve thermal performance in blown applications. Owens Corning also describes ProPink L 77 as a versatile product for walls, attics, cathedral ceilings, and floors.
- Designed for blown-in loosefill applications
- Available for wall applications, including blown-wall installations
- Designed for high coverage and efficient installation
- Owens Coming reports virtually no settling, helping maintain the intended thermal performance when properly installed
- Manufactured fiberglass insulation is non-combustible and non-corrosive, according to Owens Corning's product information
BIB vs. Traditional Batt Insulation
Traditional batt insulation is installed as individual pieces that are cut and fitted into each wall cavity. BIB uses a netting system and blown fiberglass to fill the cavity.
Both methods can be effective when installed correctly. BIB gives builders another fiberglass option for wall cavities where a blown installation is preferred. The appropriate system depends on the project, wall design, required R-value, budget, and installation requirements.
A System Built for New Construction
BIB is installed while the wall framing is open, before dmwall covers the cavities. This gives the installer direct access to the wall assembly and allows the insulation to be blown into the cavities and verified before the walls are closed.
Owens Corning provides specific installation instructions, coverage information, and wall documentation for ProPink L 77, allowing the installation to be based on the manufacturer's requirements rather than simply filling a cavity by appearance.
